Finding the Perfect Lenses for Kids

Trivex for Kids

In our last post, we discussed the importance of creating a child-friendly atmosphere in your practice. As an eye care professional, you have the privilege of forging a relationship with some of your patients from their very first eye exam onward. When treating these patients, it is important for you and parents to understand the developmental milestones associated with various stages of their lives.

Schoolvision Assessment

Trivex for Kids

Which children would I like to see in my Schoolvision clinic? My short answer is all children! The parent with a child who is obviously struggling academically will usually do all they can to try to help their child progress. However, what about all the bright children who achieve good results in spite of visual difficulties? Put them through a standard NHS eye examination and they pass as being able to see well in the distance, perhaps being given some near point of convergence exercises (are they ever performed by the child once at home?), and the parent is reassured that their eyes are fine.

Children's Eye Care

Trivex for Kids

I have been asked by my son's secondary school to go to their career fair to represent Optometry. They have already asked a G.P, a physiotherapist, a nurse and a dentist so were hoping I would also join them. The school knows that I am an Optometrist because every year since my first child joined, I have asked the school newsletter to publish a request to all parents to take their child for an eye test. I have no idea how many parents actually take the advice but I am trying!
I thought I would use the College of Optometrists web site to investigate their careers information. The most interesting part was how school visits are being organised. Follow this link www.newdimensioninoptics.org I had no idea this was taking place and think it is a fantastic way to introduce young people to both the importance of eye care for themselves and to recruit them to a career in Optics.
I hope to have a successful stall, but shall also suggest the school sign up for a school visit and see how the children react.

Eye Examination For Kids

I remember (not so very long ago!) being asked several times by my clinic manager if as an Optometrist I would fit in an extra appointment to see a child as “They don't take very long”.
